The trust crisis:
B2B marketing is truly (hehe) getting a trust problem. Not because buyers are impossible to please, but because too many have been sold to, promised the world… and let down.
→ They’ve been through the pitch decks that gloss over the hard bits.
→ They’ve been promised “industry-leading results” that never arrive.
→ They’ve been chased down email funnels like prey.
So they’re coming to that first conversation with their guard up.
And in all honesty, I get it. Because at the heart of it, B2B isn’t really business to business, it’s person to person. And once trust is broken between people, it’s ten times harder to repair.
It’s hard to admit, but you know when that trust is gone.
You know it’s there when a prospect leans in, genuinely curious. You also know when it’s not when they fold their arms, keep the camera off, and give one-word answers.
It shows up in…
- The prospect who needs “just one more reference” before they sign.
- The buyer who wants every detail in writing because they’ve been burned before.
- The sales cycle that drags for months because they’re trying to catch you out.
This isn’t just friction. It’s a market shaped by disappointment.
Want to know what really matters? Authenticity and Transparency.
Here’s the thing: you can’t spin your way to trust, you earn it.
- Authenticity is all about letting people see the real humans behind your business. What they like, who they are. The real little insights into what makes them them!
- Transparency is giving them the full picture. And by full picture, I mean the good, the bad, and the realistic. And trust me, one of the reasons we love our clients so much, is because we all are completely transparent.
When you do both, amazing things happen! Decision-makers relax, conversations flow and they stop looking for what’s “missing” in your pitch, because you’ve already put it on the table!
So Rachel, how do I fix this?!
Well it’s not a simple fix at all. But there are some things you can do, and some things that you can do quickly!
1. Replace those overpromises with proof
Forget the “best-in-class” claims and instead as your ideal customer, show me you’re worth it. Do this through real numbers, real clients and real stories.
An EdTech client we worked with used to promise “high impact” without context. We replaced it with actual impact data from surveys.
2. Pricing and processes should be easy to understand
If you make people work to get the information that matters most to them, you lose trust before you’ve even started. If there are variables in your pricing, just explain why to them. If there are common reasons people don’t go ahead, own them. That’s respect.
Our own service booklet highlights what you get with each tier of our services, meaning our prospects can see exactly what they get in each band!
3. People-first is a gamechanger
Logos are fine and awards are fine (to be honest, they’re pretty nice!) But buyers don’t build trust with a brand name, they build it with the people they’ll actually be working with, especially nowadays when there are 50 products doing the same thing!
For one consultancy we advised them to ditch the old stock photos and instead use imagery of the team doing what they do best. Not polished stock imagery with cheesy smiles, just real photography to show they are real people.
4. It’s okay to say you aren’t the right fit…
It’s counterintuitive, but saying “we might not be right for you” is one of the strongest trust moves you can make. And in all honesty, it says you value their success over your sale.
I’ve had to do it here at Conv3rt. Sometimes, we just aren’t the right people for them. Their needs might differ and that’s fine. I’d rather be truthful than struggle with a client when it’s not going to work.
You’ll be winning
When you lead with authenticity and transparency, you will soon find:
- Shorter sales cycles because people feel safe making decisions faster.
- You’ll be closing more deals because prospects believe you’ll deliver.
- Those retention rates will increase because that working relationship blossoms.
And most importantly… You turn transactions into relationships and relationships are where repeat business, referrals, and real brand advocates are born.
The trust crisis isn’t going away on its own. In fact with AI flooding inboxes and social feeds, it’s only going to get harder to stand out.
But the solution isn’t louder marketing. It’s truer marketing. It’s showing up as real people, telling real stories, and inviting buyers into a conversation they can believe in.
Because when people trust you, they don’t just buy from you, they stay with you. And that’s where the magic happens.
